LAST NIGHT, THERE was shock and anger at the news that the Great British Bake Off will be moving to Channel 4 next year. But that’s not all.
The BBC announced earlier this evening that Mel and Sue will be stepping down as hosts of the show once it moves channels.
In a joint statement filled with baking puns (of course), they said that they “made no secret” of their desire for the show to stay at the BBC:
We’ve had the most amazing time on Bake Off, and have loved seeing it rise and rise like a pair of yeasted Latvian baps. We’re not going with the dough. We wish all the future bakers every success.
Every GBBO fan knows that Mel and Sue are a big reason why the show is so popular – here are just a few times they proved they are the queens of the baking tent.
1. Every time they add to the show’s ever-growing innuendo pile
Do you have warm hands? Either on your bag or on you?
2. Not to mention the puns. So many puns
3. When they reacted just as we would when confronted with delicious chocolate mousse
“GET OFF. MY MOUSSE.”
4. When Sue did this with a cast-off bit of dough
How they didn’t do this every time is beyond us.
5. When they had zero time for Paul’s carry-on
Who’s going to tell Paul to get on with it now? Who?
6. And brought out Mary’s naughty side
G’wan Mary. Horse it int’ye.
7. Every time they were there to comfort a contestant in need
This includes all your jar-opening needs. Cheers, Sue:
8. And cheer them on
The best people to have in your corner.
9. Even when they weren’t that helpful at all

10. When they showed there’s more than one way to say the word ‘bake’
BAAAaaaAKE!
11. And finally, this valuable piece of advice from Sue
We’ll take that one to the grave. *sniff*
